Why Do You Need To Choose A Niche Within The Lifestyle Category

I’m sure this question is something that you’ve been thinking about. Why shouldn’t you just have a general lifestyle blog that covers several topics?

There are several key reasons why you should “niche down” your lifestyle blog:

  • It’s easier to deliver content to an interested reader: your audience wants information on a specific topic and not all the others you write about
  • You become a topic expert: position yourself as knowledgeable in your niche
  • Growing your blog is easier: focusing on one specific topic area gives you a greater opportunity to produce great content, build up good SEO and start ranking faster
  • It’s easier to monetize: with more traffic and credibility, your conversion rates for affiliate links, digital products and services will improve

Top Lifestyle Blog Niches

So now that you know why it’s important to “niche down”, let’s explore the top lifestyle blog niches and their sub-niches.

It’s best not to choose a broad niche, but a sub-niche. It makes it so much easier to stand out from a sea of other lifestyle blogs

I’ve pulled together the top ones that are most popular and profitable. They are broken down into sub-niches that make it easier to stand out as an expert and build your personal brand.

1. Health And Wellness Lifestyle Blogs

These are some of the most popular and profitable lifestyle category niches and can be broken down into specific areas:

  • Fitness
  • Nutrition
  • Mental Health
  • Holistic Wellness
  • Alternative Therapies
  • Healthy Eating
  • Yoga
  • Meditation
  • Mindfulness

It’s very important that if you’re blogging under most of these topics you should have certifications and legitimate proof of training.

The reason for this is that Google’s E-E-A-T comes into play for post rankings.

These topics fall into the Your Money Your Life (YMYL) category, where incorrect advice in blog content can potentially affect somebody negatively or hurt them.

Topics such as mindfulness are less likely to affect somebody negatively, so you don’t have to necessarily have specific qualifications.

PRO TIP: Share your qualifications and certifications on the About page. Learn how to write a kickass About Me page that relays to your reader exactly what to expect from your blog and about your credibility and expertise.

2. Personal Finance And Savings Blogs

In the same YMYL category of lifestyle blog niches are some of the sub-niches (listed below) in the personal finance and investing niche.

For SEO success, you will need to have a background and experience in these categories. However, you can still be quite successful and have a profitable blog in this space.

Here are some of the sub-niches in the personal finance and savings niche:

  • Budgeting
  • Investing
  • Financial planning
  • Money-saving tips and strategies
  • Side hustles

For the last two sub-niches, you don’t necessarily need any certification or qualifications. Being able to show your experiences and success through posts will be enough.

Money-saving strategies can include a softer topic such as frugal living strategies. Side hustles can be about making a passive income or other ways to make money.

3. Food And Drink Blogs

We all have to eat.

This is why blogs about food and drink are always popular.

They can also be extremely lucrative, due to the long time spent on them. For example, you can have site visitors on a recipe page for well over five to 10 minutes. They’ll return to it over and over again as they progress in making the recipe.

This is why ads are often plastered all over recipe posts.

What kind of food and drink sub-niches can you focus on?

  • Recipes
  • Cooking techniques
  • Restaurant Reviews
  • Cocktail and drinks blogs
  • Food and cookbook reviews
  • Dietary lifestyles (such as vegetarian vegan, keto, etc.)
  • Food styling and photography

4. Personal Development And Self-Care

Next on our list of lifestyle blog niches and sub-niches are the personal development and self-care topics.

These are related in many ways. They are about improving yourself!

Readers for this niche are looking for inspiration, strategies and ideas on how to live a better, smarter life.

Sub-niches include:

  • Motivational content
  • Self-help
  • Productivity and time management tips
  • Goal setting
  • Self-care tips

I love this category because it’s so helpful!

If you’re certified as a life coach, you can monetize by offering online coaching.

5. Parenting, Mom and Family Lifestyle Blogs

It’s a huge topic area and one that has a huge audience: parenting, mom life and family life are popular niches that can be fine-tuned into specific sub-niches.

Here are some of the sub-niches in this lifestyle niche:

  • Parenting tips
  • Pregnancy and new mom tips
  • Family activities
  • Childcare tips and advice
  • Mom lifestyle (can be narrowed down into organized mom life, mom fashion and style, single mom and more)
  • Kid and family-oriented product reviews

These can be extremely lucrative with ads, affiliate marketing, sponsored content and your digital products.

6. Travel And Adventure Lifestyle Blogs

While some will put this in a separate category of blogs, I believe that adventure and travel blogs fall under the lifestyle category.

With these two niches, I strongly recommend you narrow it down to a sub-niche.

Becoming an expert helps you become recognizable in the travel blogging world. For example, Rick Steeves is well known for his European travel experiences.

These are just some of the sub-niches in the travel and adventure niche:

  • Travel guides for specific destinations
  • Destination reviews
  • Travel tips
  • Travel product reviews
  • Budget travel
  • Family travel
  • Luxury travel
  • Sustainable travel
  • Solo travel
  • Adventure travel

7. Fashion And Style Lifestyle Blogs

This is a popular niche because it’s fun and always draws blog traffic. It can also be very profitable with multiple sources of income including affiliate marketing, sponsored content and tutorials.

You can even position yourself as a consultant.

The key sub-niches in the fashion and style blog niche are:

  • Fashion blogs
  • Beauty tips
  • Personal styling
  • Fashion trends
  • Clothing reviews
  • Makeup and skincare reviews
  • Makeup tutorials
  • Fashion photography

PRO TIP: Be aware that you’ll be checking backlinks and affiliate links often, as products on retail sites are often removed. You’ll also need to be very careful about the photos you use: original photos will keep you from potentially getting sued. Remember to blog legally!

8. Home and Interior Design Lifestyle Blogs

This is one of my favourite blog niches and one that does very well on social media.

You’ve seen the Instagram reels and TikToks about people transforming their spaces.

Home and Interior Design blogs are some of the most popular lifestyle blog niches.

Sub-niches for these niches include:

  • Home Decor
  • Interior design tips
  • DIY projects
  • Home organization
  • Home reno/decor product reviews
  • Architecture

9. Entertainment And Pop Culture Blogs

Who doesn’t love gossip? Or follow along with their favourite show?

These can be very popular, profitable blogs (think ads).

Sub-niches in these broader niches include:

  • Movies
  • TV shows
  • Music
  • Celebrity gossip
  • Gaming
  • Events and Festivals
  • Pop culture trends

Sub-niches for TV shows, music and gaming can take you even further. For example, a niche blog about film noir or pop music.

10. Sustainable And Eco-Friendly Living

Two other popular sub-niches in the lifestyle blog niche is sustainable living and eco-friendly living.

Many are seeking to live a cleaner, more sustainable lifestyle. Sub-niches include:

  • Eco-conscious living
  • Zero-waste lifestyle
  • Ethical fashion
  • Sustainable living and practices
  • Environmentally-friendly products

There are many ways to make one of these blogs profitable – from ads, product reviews, digital products, and even consulting.

Other Lifestyle Niches

While this list of lifestyle niches and sub-niches can offer you a focused blog that’s easier to make successful if you still want to blog on several various topics you can.

However, what I recommend you do is to look at your audience and their key core problems.

For example:

  • Gen Z: the core problem is how to get started with your life and be successful, choosing the best path for success
  • Millennials: facing economic and social issues – growing their family, managing stress, debts
  • Midlife/Gen-X: getting ready for retirement, coming into your own, managing stress, living a more balanced life

You can select a couple of related niches from the list above but all need to relate to a core problem your key audience is facing.

I can be writing about living a more balanced, less stressed out life as a Gen-X with my core topics being personal development, self-care and the home. This is the case with my Suburban Tourist blog.

It’s best to write for an audience that you can relate to – so for example, if you’re a Gen-Xer like myself, it’s hard to write for a Gen Z.
