Woman sitting at a table with a cup, using her laptop - essential pages for blogs.

One of the questions new bloggers have is about what pages they need to add to their site. You may know about the About page, but what are other essential pages for blogs?

It can be confusing to figure out your blog’s site structure and what key pages are required.

You want to impress your site visitors with a professional-looking blog, with information that helps them understand what your site is about. Additionally, you want them to connect with you easily via a Contact page.

While many new bloggers focus their attention on writing and publishing blog posts, the more important thing is to get these essential pages published.

By the end of this post, you’ll have a checklist of essential pages for a blog, other important pages you may need and a roadmap for creating the right content you need page-wise.

Pages Versus Posts: How They’re Different

Before we look at the checklist of essential pages for blogs, let’s understand what pages are compared to blog posts.

The simple difference is this: blog posts are dynamic and updated often while blog pages are static.

Blog posts are constantly updated with new information, and refreshed to improve search engine rankings.

Pages like About and Contact pages do not change often. They are core pages that tell site visitors about the blog.

6 Essential Pages For Blogs

These key pages for blogs are a must-have. Whether you are looking at pages for websites or blogs, these are the core pages that tell your site visitors about your website’s purpose and key details.

Let’s explore these essential blog pages:

  • Home page
  • About page
  • Contact page
  • Privacy Policy
  • Disclaimer
  • Terms & Conditions

Home Page – Make A Great First Impression

What’s the purpose of a home page?

It’s the main page of the website that tells site visitors what your blog is all about. It needs to impress quickly.

This is why it needs to be:

  • Well designed
  • On-brand with messaging for your niche
  • Professional-looking – no broken links or images!

Of this list of key pages for blogs, this one is the most important one, so make it a priority.

There are two types of home pages you can create:

1. Static Home Page

These are best for blogs that are marketing tools for businesses (e.g. a freelance or coaching business).

They include sections that speak to the reader’s key problem and share how you solve them. There is usually a section that includes the top blog posts you want to feature.

TIP: Want to see a static home page? Click on my logo by my navigation bar and you’ll see my version of a static home page that I built with a premade WordPress theme from Bluchic, and the page builder – Elementor. Some themes like Kadence have page builder options as well, making it very easy to create a static home page.

2. Blog Post Page As Home Page

This is where the latest blog posts you’ve published appear, along with perhaps a customized banner. It depends on your blog’s theme (e.g. WordPress themes allow you to customize the header banner with specific posts).

Many beginner bloggers start with a theme that uses this approach. It’s a standard blog home page layout.

The About Page

Another one of the key pages for blogs is the About page. A 2023 study showed that 52% of people who visit a website check out the About page first. The probability is that they do the same for blogs and anybody blogging for their business.

For businesses, this is one of the more important pages on the site. People want to know who you are, what you offer them and your values.

A common mistake is to write about yourself.

Address the reader’s needs first: tell them about your site’s content so they can see if it aligns with their needs.

Then you can position yourself as the niche expert.

Contact Page

Next on the checklist for key pages for blogs is the contact page. You do not need to have much copy on this page.

It needs:

  • A header
  • Brief instructions on how to connect with you and when you will answer them
  • A contact form

For business sites, you may need a FAQ page for this page, especially as you will probably get inundated with spammy requests.

Or perhaps, like me, you will get a plethora of pitches for sponsored posts and articles when you clearly state you don’t accept them.

Here’s my contact page – note the GDPR consent toggle at the bottom.

TIP: Test your contact form. Make sure it works! I recommend testing it periodically to see if everything is functioning as it should be.

3 Essential Legal Pages For Blogs

Whether you have a blog or a business website, you will need certain legal pages to ensure that you’re protecting yourself legally and financially.

Typically, most blogs and websites (that have blogs) need the following:

  • Privacy Policy
  • Disclaimer
  • Terms & Conditions

These key pages for blogs and websites alike will need to be updated regularly as policies are introduced over time. This is why I use templates provided by a blogger who is also a lawyer – A Self Guru.

Once you purchase her legal page template bundle, she sends you updates whenever there is a new section to add to Privacy Policy pages, etc.

Key legal pages for blogs must be up-to-date at all times.

TIP: Invest in legal pages for blogs and sleep easier knowing that somebody won’t easily be able to sue you.

Other Key Blog Pages

What are other important pages to consider adding to your blog?

Aside from the essentials, over time you can add the following:

Products and Services Pages

Who needs this? Anybody selling digital products, physical products and/or services.

For example, you can have a digital product shop page for your digital products such as eBooks, printables or courses.

The shop page will include a gallery of your products with links to sales pages. This is where you can speak to the product’s benefits and features and have a link to the checkout page.

Pages for services are slightly different. This is where you speak to the customer’s problem and showcase the services that help solve them.

If you’re a coach or consultant, you also want to add your key services/

Favourite Resources / Shop Page

You may have noticed that I have a Blog Tools page. Some have a “Shop My Favorites” page. Others will have a Resources page.

When it comes to key pages for blogs, this is one that’s usually a moneymaker when done right.

In many cases, this is where you promote your free resources (like a lead magnet) and the affiliate products you love.

It could be a gallery-style page like the one I’ve created for my blog tools and resources.

Or it could be a simple post-style page with lists.

This is up to you! However, it’s a good idea to include one to promote affiliate products and resources that you have that solve your audience’s key issues.

Testimonials/Our Work

As a blog coach, one of the most important things I focused on was creating one of the most important pages for a blog that promotes a service: the client results/testimonials page.

Whether you are a coach like me, or a freelance service provider (e.g. virtual assistant, website designer, etc.), you will need something like this page. It can be also called “Our Work” or “Client Results”.

Like a portfolio, this page is where you provide social proof that your work is top-notch. Potential clients want to see how you help others.

TIP: Always get permission from clients to use their testimonials, names and sites. To do this you will need a media release agreement. If you use it without legal permission, you may face a lawsuit.

FAQs Page

If you’re running services, a membership or a digital shop, you may want to create a FAQ page that answers commonly asked questions.

Here are a few tips for FAQ page best practices:

  • Organize the questions into groups and categories (about the blog, products & services, technical issues)
  • Bold the questions
  • Use an accordion-style feature (collapsible) if your theme allows it
  • Add interlinks to pages and blog posts that answer questions
  • Optimize it for SEO
  • Add it to the main navigation
  • Add links to it on your About page or anywhere else you think your reader may have these questions

FAQ pages play a role on your site, and for this reason it’s on this list of important pages for a blog.

Set Up Important Pages For A Blog In The Beginning

For new blogs, these six essential pages – the home, about and contact pages, and three legal pages, should be set up sooner rather than later. All others can come at a later time.

Once you’ve got the key blog pages completed, you can focus on writing blog posts and promoting your site.
