Coffee For Bloggers And Solopreneurs: Coffee Brands That I Love

Sure, I can get a package of coffee from the grocery store. But there are two that I like and support for two different reasons.

I’m not a coffee blogger, but I do know what’s good. I occasionally post a coffee-related Instagram post or story, or one of many coffee quotes.

Frankly, the popular Starbucks doesn’t do it for me. It’s over-roasted and bitter.

This is why I’ve started making good coffee at home. If you’re like me – and you have a coffee bar/station – you’ll want read on!

Talitha Coffee – Coffee For A Cause

It’s rare when you find a coffee for a cause that you truly believe in and want to support.

Based out of San Diego, CA, Talitha Coffee is one that I discovered by accident.

They reached out to me noting that they liked my site and what I was sharing. The Talitha team wanted to send me their coffee and wondered if I could help boost awareness for their brand and mission.

We tried their Arise medium roast (sooo delicious, with notes of Baker’s Chocolate, walnut and molasses) and the decaf Sunset Serenade organic coffee (notes of hazelnut, Graham Cracker and caramel). Both are quality coffees that impress your palate.

However, the brand’s mission is what truly captured my interest. Talitha Coffee is a coffee for a cause.

Proceeds from sales of Talitha Coffee go directly to programs to end sex trafficking. It also aims to “empower survivors and equip them with the tools and support they need to thrive”.

Not only does the coffee taste great (the decaf is delightful in the late afternoon), but their support of those who have been so horrifically victimized is admirable.

An Interview With Talitha Coffee Co-Founder, Jenny Barber

I asked Jenny Barber, one of the co-founders of Talitha Coffee, about how they started the company and why they do what they do.

Her story and the business story are truly inspiring and a MUST READ:

Q. Tell us about how you started Talitha coffee.

My husband and I have been a part of the anti-trafficking movement for 14 years.

Talitha started from a place of us seeing an issue with a gap in opportunities for survivors rebuilding their lives and taking the skills we had to provide solutions.

My husband had started roasting coffee as a hobby. Beginning with a popcorn popper on our stove top and gradually upgrading to bigger machinery.

Seeing my inner turmoil with the issues of re-entry we were facing he suggested we start a coffee company- taking our skills and doing something to address the issues.

We started by opening a coffee shop in Los Angeles and quickly knew that if we were going to be a part of shaping the progress with re-entry solutions, we would have to go larger scale.

We reached out to Mike, a long-time friend with an incredible track record of scaling business, and asked for his help in building Talitha. He asked if we wanted to employ 5 or 10 survivors, and we responded that we wanted to employ 1000.

He began to explore the potential for growth in the coffee industry with the goal of helping us build something that was highly successful AND highly impactful. He became inspired by this potential and completely pivoted his life to join us.

We made our first roastery acquisition at the end of 2022, taking us from 300 lbs/month to 10,000 lbs/month overnight, and have been on a steady growth trajectory since.

Q. What makes Talitha coffee stand out from the rest?

First of all, we are survivor-founded.

We are building an informed model that brings empowerment to other survivors.

We see the survivors as the heroes of the story and are committed to providing them opportunities and support as they take courageous steps in building their lives and achieving their goals.

Secondly, we serve specialty coffee that is intentionally roasted and ethically sourced. We take steps to make sure that we are not only providing an incredible cup of coffee but that every step – from farming the coffee to the cup being served is combatting exploitation.

We are actually thrilled to bring survivors into a company that is providing something they can be proud of.

The other aspect that sets us apart is that we have a high value for partnerships.

There are many people that are a part of the movement to fight trafficking and bring hope to survivors.

We are honored to partner with many experts and non-profits to not only provide employment and training opportunities but also provide a comprehensive support network that really champions and supports survivors in practical ways like housing, legal services, and therapeutic resources.

Q. Share with us why you decided to support victims of sex trafficking.

Our work in anti-trafficking started from a place of personal conviction and passion. I had been exposed to the issue of trafficking from a young age and faced exploitation as a child myself.

After about a decade of working in anti-trafficking, we have worked in multiple areas of focus, but primarily focused on outreach and advocacy.

We have seen massive strides in awareness, prevention, outreach, and recovery; but we have noticed that many survivors were leaving their exploiters, going through recovery, only to return to their exploitation because of lack of opportunity.

As I mentioned, we felt the conviction to bring what we carried to the table and make a difference. We didn’t want to sit on the sidelines and think, “Someone should do something about that issue”.

We wanted to take action and inspire others to do the same.

Q. What’s next for Talitha coffee?

The future of Talitha is so exciting!

When our CEO, Mike Glanz, came on to help build Talitha he asked me if I hoped to hire 5 or 10 survivors. I told him I wanted to hire 1,000. And since our dreams have only grown.

We’re working toward establishing 100 roasteries in 25 marketplaces across the country, creating opportunities and support networks for survivors throughout the nation.

A Canadian Coffee Brand To Love – Zavida Coffee

If you’re in Canada and you shop at Costco, you’re bound to see the large bags of Zavida Hazelnut Vanilla Coffee.

I was introduced to it by my husband when we started dating, and I have loved this brand since.

We’ve been purchasing Zavida coffee regularly online, watching it grow into a top Canadian coffee brand.

Since we’re Canadian, we love to support awesome Canadian brands!

We love how Zavida has always been focused on sustainability – including supporting fruit tree planting in African communities (this planet needs more trees that are the best natural carbon capture machines) and the Rainforest Alliance.

However, the taste and fun range of origin coffees and flavoured coffees are what keep me coming back to Zavida.

The consistency in the quality of the product is also a key factor. I like that I can have an affordable, quality cup of coffee when I’m busy blogging and growing my business.
