Some of the most popular posts on Instagram are landscape images using nature hashtags. As such, travel companies, bloggers, photographers, and outdoor brands post these kinds of photos, using outdoor hashtags and nature hashtags that drive engagement.
But what nature hashtags and outdoor hashtags for Instagram are the most popular and have the most engagement in 2024?
As of December 2023, it had over 500 million active daily users. Therefore, there are billions of photos and reels being posted on any given day.
With algorithm changes, the chance of somebody finding your photo is getting more difficult. This is why using the mix of right, relevant nature hashtags and outdoor hashtags is important.
I’ve updated a list of popular nature hashtags and outdoor hashtags that I shared before to include the ones that are getting the most attention right now.
I’ve also included some landscape hashtags for 2024 and my favourite hiking hashtags for Instagram!
Keeping this in mind, what are the best nature and outdoor hashtags to use?

Aside from the expected hashtags, I’ve looked to find those that are less used (less than 1 million). Here are some of the best nature hashtags being used these days.

Editing Photos Is Important For Instagram
People are posting using their Apple or Android smartphone camera photos.
They’re modifying them with filters and editing apps.
The style du jour is a Lightroom-edited, crisp but de-saturated look or a bright white/pastel-coloured scheme. There are so many presets that you can purchase and use to create a visual style.
The latter bright preset is very popular with lifestyle and mom bloggers everywhere. Professional landscape and nature photographers prefer to go with full, vibrant colours.
Whether you use a phone or camera, it pays to take the time to edit and craft the perfect photo.
Always use the rules of good photography! This approach will help your photo stand out when your nature hashtags are searched by others.
A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words… Hopefully Thousands Of Likes
I think what’s so appealing about Instagram is the ease of use and the simplicity of tapping the photo to like it.
Also, it shows how a simple photo can convey a strong message or evoke an emotion. An Instagram post can also entertain, inform and inspire.
I’ve noticed that many of the professional-looking photos for nature hashtags and outdoor hashtags are the only ones making it onto my feed.
So posting beautiful photos rather than quick snapshots may potentially get you more exposure. Consistency is key.
Use one of these free photo editor apps online that do a great job with colour, balance, and even have some cool filters!
NOTE: Try to use inspirational nature quotes with beautiful photos – whether as a text overlay or in the caption.
Most importantly, it’s best not to use more than 30 hashtags.
My sweet spot is between 10 and 20 hashtags.
Choosing the best nature hashtags and outdoor hashtags can increase viewers and likes.
But you should always change up the ones you use, so your posts aren’t perceived as spammy by Instagram.
Also, use a few popular ones (over 1 million) with less popular nature hashtags (I like to use anything under 1 million, 500,0000, and under 100,000).
Even though it’s great to have access to a HUGE audience, there are smaller hashtags that have great followings and can get you greater engagement.
So choose your nature hashtags and outdoor hashtags wisely!
Apart from using nature and outdoor hashtags, you may also want to include the season (e.g. #fall).
As well, search for hashtags that are related to the season. For example, you will fall #fallfoliage or #springflowers.
In addition to this, consider the type of photo you are posting. For example, #macroflower is a popular one. If you’re taking a landscape image with a wide-angle lens, use #wideangle.
Finally, if you’re blending travel with nature landscapes, add a few relevant travel hashtags.
Furthermore, the popular #igers hashtag has evolved into numerous ones (e.g. #igerscanada) including one for #igersnature.
While it’s not as hugely popular as #nature, it may help you stand out if somebody happens to be searching using it.

QUESTION: What are your favourite nature hashtags? Outdoor hashtags? Always happy to add to this growing list!

This post originally appeared in 2015 and has been updated with new nature hashtags and information regarding Instagram hashtag search functions.
Solid advice on hashtag strategy! Keeping it under 30 hashtags strikes a good balance, and your sweet spot of 10 to 20 seems just right. It’s all about finding that Goldilocks zone.
Glad you think so! It’s worked best for me.
Thanks so much for including #WeGetOutside on your list. When I started the #WeGetOutside chat on Twitter a few years ago, that hashtag had almost zero use on any social channels. It’s exciting to see it’s use has grown and is gaining popularity!
You are most welcome Gayle! Glad to help get more visibility for you!
I’m definitely saving a bunch of these! What a great list!
Glad you like the lists!
Great tips for nature lovers and photographers! When I use hashtags for nature-type photos I usually hashtag the town or city as well!
Yes – that’s always a great idea! Usually the town’s tourism board as well. They like to re-share on their accounts.
Hey these seem like great tips thanks, I’m going to come follow you on Insta! 🙂
Thank you! I’ll follow back.
